I often get asked about my clear skin so of course I wanted to share some of my tips for optimal results. Skin is one of those more complex subjects since everyone has different skin with different needs.
If you’re someone who has more complex skin issues, I recommend making an appointment with your dermatologist. If you have great skin already but may have slight issues here and there, then these tips may help you improve your skin.
Also, seeing an aesthetician/beautician might help you find more targeted needs for your specific skin type (i.e what products are best suited for you). Your hormones/genes plays a vital role in your skin so don’t get discouraged when you have a breakout here and there. Here are some tips to clearer skin:
1. Drink Lots of Water
As cliché as this sounds, hydration is vital to clear skin. Hydration will make your skin look glowy/healthy. Dehydration will cause breakouts since the your skin will naturally try to compensate lack of hydration by producing more oil than necessary on your skin, which in turn will cause you to break out.
Good news is that you don’t necessarily have to drink water, you can drink alternatives like tea. My personal fave is green tea with lemon (sooo many health benefits to this). Also, ginger tea is great as well (or add some ginger in my lemon green tea J).
2. Exercise
Exercising will benefit you in ALL areas of your life! You will feel better, look better and act better. Everything is correlated including your skin. Exercising will help clean out your pores and increase blood circulation. Blood circulation is VITAL to help the body constantly renew and heal itself. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout your body, including your skin. Also, a few minutes after your workout in the sauna will help your body rid the toxins and clear your skin.
3. Diet
Eating healthy food will also reflect on your skin. Try to eat foods that are high in Vitamin E & C, calcium and iron. Many foods like fruits and vegetables contain many of these nourishing skin vitamins. Some of these foods include nuts, avocados, kale, broccoli, green peas, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, red/yellow bell peppers and tomatoes to name a few.
4. Use Quality Products
Premium quality skin care is best when it comes to great skin. You always want to give your skin what it needs with amazing products that will not harm or be too harsh your skin. You need to be gentle with cleaning and always remember to moisturize your skin. Moisturizing your skin will dramatically slow down your skin’s natural aging process. When your skin is dry and exposed to the sun, you will experience wrinkles at a much more rapid pace then someone who moisturizes their skin well. Always use SPF (even in the winter). SPF will protect your skin from harmful sun rays that will age your skin faster.
5. ALWAYS Remove Your Makeup Before Bed
I know, I know, you’ve heard this a million times. But it is ESSENTIAL to remove your make up every night if you want amazing skin! At night is the time when your skin takes its time to naturally renew itself. If you don’t remove your make up every night, you are leaving your pores clogged! Clogged pores=blackheads/acne. Use make-up remover wipes, a cleanser and toner. Then of course, moisturize!
6. Get Enough Sleep
Sleeping can affect many things like your focus, your energy, and of course your appearance. When you are well rested, your skin is also well rested. When you’re asleep, your body releases hormones, which recovers your body. Therefore, your skin has more time to recover from all the potential damage that can be caused by harmful factors. Enough sleep will also reduce the darkness around your eyes. I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind sleeping more, haha!
7. Exfoliate Your Skin
Exfoliating your skin will get rid of all the dead skin cells on the surface, reduce discoloration/pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. There a different levels to exfoliation. You may exfoliate daily with your loofa or you can go a bit deeper and exfoliate with a scrub. It’s important to be gentle on your skin because you don’t want to over exfoliate which can lead to redness/skin irritation. If you go for any kind of peel, make sure you give your skin enough time to recover (i.e overnight).
8. Use a Silk/Satin Pillowcase and Change it Every Week
Using Satin/Silk is much more gentle and smoother on your skin and your hair. In fact, I hear that using a cotton pillowcase is just as harsh as sandpaper! (ouch!) Changing your pillowcase can affect your skin since the oils in your hair will get on the pillowcase, along with potential sweat, therefore getting on your skin. The last thing you want is for your skin to get oily/dirty, which can cause a breakout.
Also, try avoiding touching your face so you don’t transfer any germs onto your face. Along with washing your pillowcase, wash your make up brushes every week/bi-weekly. They tend to carry germs, which can transfer to your skin if not washed regularly. Also, wash/disinfect your phone! Phones are known to have the most germs since you take it with you everywhere, including the bathroom.
9. Be Consistent
Being consistent goes with everything. Success comes from the small habits you implement daily. If you want your skin to clear up, or if you want to succeed at anything in your life, you have to be very consistent! Don’t skip days or steps when it comes to skin care. Your future self will thank you!
10. Meditation
Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years. Meditation is known to reduce stress, tension, anxiety, and depression. If practiced properly, you will feel like you are in a more calm mental state, which in turn will reflect not only on your skin, but on your entire life. Remember, getting rid of negativity in your life will reflect towards literally everything in your life.
