5 reasons you should fast that aren’t often talked about

If you are having trouble casting your problem(s) onto God, fasting would benefit you. Often we play god in our own life, thinking we can handle everything life throws at us. We think we have the ability, intellect, and or credentials to work out our worries however when it comes to the cares of life there are just some problems, situations and circumstances that we just can’t figure out.

The benefits of fasting no one talks about

I just did a 36 hour fast, for a number of reasons, however I would like to share my results. Fasting definitely requires guidance from The Holy Spirit and I know that is what carried me through this fast. But also scriptures says when you fast (Matthew 6:16), meaning fasting for a Christian should be a lifestyle, and with that I’m working on creating a fasting schedule that I can stick to and I’m sure as I fast more this list will grow:

  1. If you are having trouble casting your problem(s) onto God. Often we play god in our own life, thinking we can handle everything life throws at us. We think we have the ability, intellect, and or credentials to work out our worries however when it comes to the cares of life there are just some problems, situations and circumstances that we just can’t figure out. And even when we realize we can’t figure certain things out we are still too stubborn to come to God for help or we have a hard time releasing our problem(s) and setting them at the feet of Jesus so He can work on them. However, remember nothing pleases God like faith, and faith without works is dead (James 2:17) and part of our work is fasting so we can bring ourselves to release and believe God can fix whatever is troubling us. That’s why I learned that through fasting it becomes that much easier to release the burden or the load you are carrying onto Jesus. Your grip on your problem opens more as you realize God is able keep you from falling (Jude 1:24). When you fast it weakens the flesh and fasting can weakens your ability to go in and fix things yourself, but instead will open your spirit to receive the instructions God has for you. Your trust in faith increases in God as you feed on His Word and the barriers of your own knowledge break off and you believe God’s Word because now it is your only source, when before you were your own source. Scripture referencescasting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
  2. If you are having trouble speaking up. If you have something important to say and you want the ability to speak boldly and unashamed fast. I believe Esther fasting gave her the confidence to go before the king and petition on behalf of her people. In those days she couldn’t just show up and talk to the king even though at the time she was queen, she would have lost her life had she not found favor (Esther 2:17). But her 3 day fast gave her the courage to speak to the king. Fasting for you too can help you gain courage to talk to kings, presidents, bosses, supervisors anyone with no fear! Scripture references: “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.” Esther 4:16
  3. If you are having trouble believing something that is written in scripture. I believe fasting removes the barriers that are within us that keep us from receiving from God. Because God said what He said in His Word it’s true however our unbelief (what the doctors say, what the news reports, what logic tells us) keeps us from receiving or taking God at His Word. It’s easy believing God will supply your needs when you are gainfully employed, stocks doing well, and you are debt free. Believing God will supply your needs however can become a little challenging when you just lost your job or you just got hit with an unexpected bill that will send you in debt. However through fasting and meditating on God’s Word day and night (Psalm 1:2 Joshua 1:8) I find the Word becomes engrafted into your heart (James 1:21) faster. Scripture reference(s): But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4
  4. If you are feeling any negative emotion(s) such as anger, strife, or vengeance. Because fasting weakens the flesh you won’t have the energy to get back at someone for revenge so if something is bothering you fast so you can weaken your flesh to let it go. Another benefit of fasting when you are angry or want to get back at someone is it gives you the opportunity to examine your own heart. When you fast, it’s a time to ask for forgiveness and sometimes asking God to forgive you of the wrong you’ve done can help you forgive the wrong that was done by others to you. Scripture reference:(s) And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Mark 11:25 What good is fasting when you keep on fighting and quarreling? This kind of fasting will never get you anywhere with me. Isaiah 58:4 (NLT)
  5. If you need to make a major decision. Through my fast I believe the Holy Spirit guided a lot of my decision making. Things I had no problem with watching or listening to before fasting I automatically knew not to partake in, which lets me know that even after the fast that’s something I shouldn’t partake in. So if you need guidance for a decision or clarity on what you should or shouldn’t do fast and allow God’s spirit to lead you. Scripture reference(s): I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, for the full three weeks. (Daniel 10:3)

Additional things to remember during your fast:

Jesus said: “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Matthew 6:16-18
