Be Wary of the Free Ride and Show Up Heavy!

If it's too easy, go back and check if you got cheated. Success follows the path of resistance. Following the path of least resistance will cheat you out of your blessings. Become adept at being comfortable being uncomfortable.

It has often been my experience that the free lunch is the sinister indigestion. We live in a fast-food kind of world. Everything is ‘have it your way in the jiffy of a microwave pop-tart second.’

I often tell my nieces and nephews how we used to wait until our favorite song came on the radio to record it. I remember spending a whole summer hunting down my favorite songs with a perked ear, boombox and a clean cassette tape. Those were the days.

We are blessed to live in a time where many things come easily to us, but sometimes this does a disservice to the human spirit. It’s in the planning and organizing, in the hunt and in the waiting that we grow as individuals, that we develop stronger muscle, stamina and strength. I once heard the story of a man who turned down a full million dollars after being announced as the lottery winner. He was happy and excited at first because he really needed the money. Yet as he began to think on it, he grew wary of how easy it had come to him. It sounded too good to be true; he began to believe it was a scam. After he declined the offer, they asked how he could have been sure it was a scam. He said, “I wasn’t sure. But I wasn’t about to take any chances.”

Whether he won, he despised the free lunch, so to speak. Winning a million dollars sounds enticing enough, but what if you don’t have the correct mindset? I’ve known of people who came into half-a-million dollars and squandered it in less than a year.

Whatever you’re working towards, be it your business, brand, book, career, your body or anything else, keep working through the levels. Success follows the path of resistance. Sure, there’s the path of least resistance but that will only cheat you out of your blessings. I started learning how to train like a ballerina a few months ago and soon discovered that bridges on demi-pointe are some of the toughest workouts I’ve ever had to do, but after a few weeks to a couple of months, your body craves a new challenge. All you must do is keep going, but make sure you plan for the journey. There is no rewarding way around or over it. Imagine if Jack or David had taken the easy way out. The giant would have kept all of Jack’s and his family’s belongings and Goliath would have had his field day with the Israelite army.

In Jack and the Beanstalk, the giant senses Jack’s presence before he even sees Jack. The quatrain “Fee-fi-fo-fum!” sounds like a poetic battle cry as the giant says:

I smell the blood of an Englishman.

Be he alive or be he dead,

I’ll grind his bones to make my bread.

This is like what the giant Goliath said to David in 1 Samuel 17: 44

“Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.”

Both giants were ready to destroy the tiny intruders who dared to defy them.

Jack’s story continues as he retrieves many of his family’s stolen goods and outwits the giant by chopping the beanstalk and sending him to his death. And David came at Goliath with his faith in the LORD and five round smooth stones. Jack and David had one thing in common: a heavy presence. Such that the giants couldn’t leave well enough alone, and they both swore to destroy these boys.

Our daily presence matters, wherever we show up. Every day is another opportunity to take dominion of our territory, and to retrieve our things. The years may have stolen and kept your things for a long time, but if you are reading this, you are alive, which means you made it to this day, which means you are able to get the things which were stolen from you. Is your presence unnerving the giants or are the giants unnerving and scaring you?

Are you willing? Are you willing to gird your sword, pick up your slingshot and stones and go out to face Goliath? Are you willing to plant and climb that beanstalk and enter the giant’s home? Will today be the day you venture out to retrieve your bag of gold, your magic goose, and your magic harp?

Take the grit and grind it to make your bread. Show up heavy and hit those levels one by one. If it’s too easy, go back and see if you got cheated.
