This Is Your Life

“This is your life. Are you who you want to be?” -Switchfoot

“This is your life. Are you who you want to be?” -Switchfoot

We’ve all heard the saying “Fake it ’til you make it.” For most of my life, I’ve ignored this popular sentiment because I felt that everyone must be grounded in their reality, and that faking anything was lying to others, as well as being disingenuous to one’s self. What I failed to realize then, and what I wish I would have learned sooner, is that your reality isn’t static. You aren’t stuck, and even when you feel stuck, your environment is always shifting in various ways, big and small. Who would you be, what would you do, and where would you go in life if you started to believe that it was all possible for you? How would it feel to have all of your heart’s desires?

“Fake it ’til you make it” isn’t about being a poser or a liar. It implies that we should lead with the feeling that all that we desire is already ours, and carry that energy with us always, so that what we want will become part of our physical reality. It can be incredibly difficult to imagine our lives being any different than what they currently are, but think about this: your life was once very different than it is right now. Better or worse, it was different. It has changed and will continue to change. How our lives change is largely dependent on which direction we choose to move in, and how we are showing up for ourselves every single day. So, who are you? Who do you want to be? If these two are not the same person, start working, thinking, and behaving like the latter, and watch your life begin to change for the better.
