One thing I am a huge believer and supporter of is aligning with your gifts. A significant number of people are working for a paycheck not meaning. Because of that, people tend to have a negative mindset about work, which then seeps into their overall life. I believe a major achievement and goal everyone in life should work towards is aligning your life conditions to match your beliefs on what your dream life looks like.
Many of us have been conditioned to see a successful path looking a little something like this- go to school, get a degree, land a 9-5 office job, and work your way up the corporate ladder. The flaw with the way the education system is set up is that you are learning general knowledge that isn’t always niche focused, and it in no way guarantees you will even land a job. (The education system is also a business- let’s be real.) So once we leave with our degree in whatever it may be, we struggle to align with a career that actually fulfills us! We go to work miserable chasing a check and are left feeling unfulfilled, drained, and questioning if this is really the type of way we want to be living.
I’m someone who was heading down this path of doing what society feeds us to be the way to a successful life. Coming from a low-income household and from a family of parents who didn’t attend college, I grew up thinking the corporate way was the best and only way. My mom was always a huge advocate of me going to school and landing an office job, and I wanted to make her proud. However, once I finally entered the corporate world I knew right away that it wasn’t for me. My personality, gifts, and style of productivity didn’t fit being cooped up in an office surrounded by people who brought negative vibes at times. I knew I had to make a jump to go all in with my calling of writing, coaching, and teaching through my podcast. I’m extremely grateful I took a leap and bet on myself, and I believe you should do the same!
What is it that would leave you fulfilled each and every day and have you excited to wake up and get going? When you reflect back on your life in 5 years what is it that you will be so glad you started for yourself? Not for the standards set by society, not for the expectations set by your parents, but the goals and achievements you have persevered through for yourself? You wanna know what the most expensive currency is? Time. People think missing out on that corporate check is the biggest loss, I’d say missing out on aligning with your purpose and gifts is a far greater one.
By not aligning with your gift and sharing it with the world not only are you doing a disservice to yourself, but also to those who need your service. Your gift is the sauce of your value. Your value contributes to how much you make, and you get paid through the value you bring. I’m sure something is nudging you right now as you think about your gift. Let me tell you this, if you can feel it in you and know that people appreciate your gift, there is no limit to what you can achieve. Don’t chase a check, pursue the gift. I know it’s uncomfortable, but you will have to start getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Stepping out of your comfort zone will bring about tremendous growth, opportunities, and leave you feeling more fulfilled, inspired, and passionate in life.
You are destined for greatness and to wake up each and every day feeling excited for what the day will bring. I’ll end this with one of my favorite quotes by Nelson Mandela, “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”
