Advertising is a word that we often associate with a business, or a person trying to sell us something, like a marketer or telemarketing company, right? However, have you ever stopped to consider that you yourself are an advertiser? That’s right you. You advertise yourself daily, and probably without giving it much consideration. Don’t believe me? Consider this, when you woke up, what did you do? Did you pray and thank God for the day? If you’re like most people you went to your bathroom, took a shower, washed your face, brushed your teeth, and then decided what you wanted to wear.
Or if you took a shower before you went to bed, maybe you went straight to the kitchen, to fix breakfast, or make a pot of coffee. Or if you were in a hurry or have children, it’s possible you hit the alarm clock and got out of bed as fast as possible. Then you made sure your kids were up getting ready so that everyone could get to where they needed to be on time. But, if your kids couldn’t dress or feed themselves, well you had to do that, in addition to getting yourself ready. In either situation, think about the things in your bathroom, kitchen, and closet. All those things say something about you.
They tell what colors you like, what toothpaste you use, and even what coffee you prefer. Now, you may say why does that matter, or how is that relevant to advertising. Well, advertising is simply promoting a product or service. So, without even speaking to you, I can take one look around your house or at what you have on and determine factual things about you. Yes, that means in a way you are a walking billboard. In addition, your house, and the way you keep it or not is an announcement that speaks. It can say I’m really into decorating and color coordinating, I love sports, fishing, or hunting, or it can say I just keep it simple and cozy, and the list goes on.
Though there are times that you may not want to speak to anyone or need to be alone that too is up to you advertise as well. And all the people you meet or that see you are discerning and evaluating what you tell them. Because again you advertise to people whether you want to or not, especially when you are out in public, which includes where you work. So, you would be wise to take into consideration what you are advertising to those around you and in passing because your personal brand depends on it, especially if you are anticipating attracting your future spouse. That starts with knowing what you want to communicate and how you want others to communicate with you.
Specifically, ladies, let’s start with you. What was your first thought this morning? And how did that affect your mood? Were you happy, eager, anxious, or worried? How did you leave your house? Did you put on make-up or lipstick, comb your hair, or put on a bonnet, or wear flats or heels? Did you iron your clothes or did you leave in lounge wear? In other words, did you look messy, plain, or well put together? Did you speed out of your driveway or did you have to keep going back in to get things you forgot? What did you do during the day? Did you go to work, to the gym, or to the store? If so, how did you interact with others?
Unbelievably, everything you experience affects you, specifically, your expression and the energy people feel when they are in your presence. And though you can’t see you, others do. So, I encourage you to ask others you are close how you appear to them when they see you and when they are with you. That way you have insight to if you are advertising with outsiders the way you intend. If not, adjust and set a timeline to re-evaluate. This includes the way you choose to show up on your social media platforms. What you are wearing advertises a message, the way you pose advertises you in a positive or negative manner to the viewer, and what you say and post does the same.
Yes, you can wear whatever you choose, you are free to pose however you feel comfortable and you absolutely have the freedom of speech. However, I want you to think about your life as though you are an advertiser because remember you are. I want you to communicate to everyone the one word, idea, or image that they should associate with your name. I know sometimes as a lady it seems there’s a double standard in what is and is not acceptable or desirable. And there is. Personally, the issue is that the double standard is and remains in place because women in our society often don’t require or expect the man their interested in or that they are in a relationship with to have standards of self-love, self-respect, and decency.
Therefore, men typically don’t make changes because too many times women accept whatever they give. That’s why I am encouraging you to determine what you are advertising because you get to decide what you want your life to look like and who you want to build and share your life with. Trust me when I tell you that if a man knows your personal brand is high quality he will learn to adapt, or better yet he will not even approach you. The same goes for you if you are a man reading this blog post. Imagine a young lady sees you in person or clicks on your social media page, or better yet imagine that your spouse is on your page – what message are you advertising, what message did you want to advertise, and how did others receive the messages you advertise?
If you’re showing your muscles, flaunting money and cars, liking, and commenting on questionable photos and content of other women, or posing with hand gestures or in ways that look childish or that show you represent a certain place, group, or lifestyle, then you shouldn’t be surprise that you attract women interested in your body, want you to take care of them, or are just as childish and immature as you. Yes, it’s great to be proud of who you are, take care of what you have, be humble about where you come from and engage friendly on social media with others. However, there’s a difference in advertising this is who I am versus saying look at what I have. There’s a difference between advertising I’m open to the possibilities of meeting someone great versus I’m open to meet up and do anything with anyone. And as an adult you should be responsible and wise enough to know the difference, and as I said for the ladies, as a man you need to do the same – make necessary changes and re-evaluate.
You wouldn’t show up to a Bugatti dealership looking for Hyundai and you wouldn’t go to an organic whole foods store looking for a deep-dish pizza; so, recognize advertising is a part of life and we can’t say we want something or someone, but advertise ourselves and live our life in a way that says we don’t want it, we are not capable of handling it, and we will not improve our state of being to have it. ~Coach Sam~
