Who Do You Think You Are? (part 2)

When you start to question who you really are and what your truth really is, you have to pay attention to what resonates with your soul... Finding and healing yourself is the most important job you will ever have. Simply because no one can do it for you. It is 100% an inside job.

In part 1 of “Who do you think you are?” I talked about self-discovery and asking yourself who you think you are versus who others think you are. In this post we’re going to dive a little deeper into the journey of self-discovery and finding your own personal truth.

When you start to question who you really are and what your truth really is, you have to pay attention to what resonates with your soul. How does a certain belief or opinion make you feel? Do you feel light and happy? Or do you feel heavy and tense? Do you feel light with expectation or do you feel a sense of dread? We were gifted with the same instinctual abilities as animals, with the added ability to think and reason. Animals rely on their instincts for survival. If they sense danger, they run. They don’t stay and question the situation then “hope for the best”. If they do, they die. As it pertains to human beings, we get a little more leeway in that we sometimes have the luxury of evaluating a situation and then deciding how to proceed. But there are times when, just like animals, we need to run first, then ask questions later. Sometimes our lives depend on it.

Have you ever been in a situation where something just didn’t feel right but you stayed anyway, just to end up regretting it? That was your intuition, your soul speaking its truth, telling you that you were in a situation you didn’t need to be in. Our soul always knows the truth, and it always shares that truth with us. But a lot of the time we don’t listen. Sometimes it’s because it gets drowned out from all of the “noise” (other people and society telling us who we should/shouldn’t be); sometimes it’s because we don’t recognize it for what it is; and sometimes we just straight up don’t want to hear what it’s telling us. If I had a dollar for every time I ignored my intuition just to end up regretting it, I would never have to work again! These days, I have learned to listen, the majority of the time. Life is a learning process, so yes, there are times when I’m still a little hard-headed and end up repeating a lesson because I didn’t listen the first time. But because my soul loves me so much and has my best interests at heart, it is ever-so-kind and sends me another lesson to make sure I eventually get it right (LOL). The difference between then and now is that now I recognize that: 1- every experience is a lesson, 2- I won’t always get it right the first time, and that’s OK.

Through many difficult and painful experiences, I have learned some much-needed life lessons. Lessons which forced me to find and acknowledge my personal truth, and to find out who I think I am. Because I now know who I am, no one else can tell me who I am (not). I don’t have to accept anyone else’s opinion of who I am if it doesn’t resonate with who I have determined I am. That power comes from self-knowledge. If you know who you are, no one can tell you who you’re not! People often project their own insecurities, failures, and disappointments on others. As the saying goes, “Misery loves company.” People tend to view the world based on their own experiences and perceptions, not how it actually is (but if everybody is looking through their own lenses, then who’s to say what “actually is”?). Because everyone is operating within their own version of the truth, that makes it so much more important that you find your truth and live by it.

When you try to live a truth imposed upon you by others, your soul rejects it. That’s the anxious, heavy, tight feeling you feel when you’re not in alignment with what your soul is telling you. As I said before, your soul knows the truth and will always tell it to you. You just have to hear it, acknowledge it, and abide by it. When you don’t, you will draw experiences to you that will cause you to repeat a lesson until you get it. Your soul will never give up on trying to get the truth to you. In the worst-case scenario, it will force you to hit rock bottom in order to get your attention. When you’re at rock bottom you are forced to pay attention, whether you like it or not. The longer you choose not to listen to the truth your soul is trying to tell you, the longer that situation persists. Once you decide to become obedient to the promptings of your soul, it will then guide you towards what you need to learn to get up and out of that dark place. But understand that you will have to do the necessary work that comes along with your ascent out of the depths of darkness. There’s no way around it. If even faith without works is dead, then why would you expect to rise to the top without putting in the work required? Finding and healing yourself is the most important job you will ever have. Simply because no one can do it for you. It is 100% an inside job.

Make it a point to get to know the “voice” of your soul, then make it an even bigger point to listen and act when it speaks to you. When you make friends with your soul, your life will flow so much easier. That doesn’t mean life will be easy (because it is a journey with many lessons to learn), but it does mean you will be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way.

So again, I ask you, “Who do you think you are?”

Let’s get lifted!
